Here's a Scarecrow with a warm, friendly Cabernet smile. This vineyard in Rutherford, once known as the J.J. Cohn Ranch, delivers another wonderful wine in 2005. It's a remarkable mix of rich, polished fruit combined with great finesse and harmony.

Vineyard 29's Aida bottling, from nearby St. Helena, is similarly refined and graceful, with deep, persistent, concentrated fruit flavors. In addition, Kevin Vogt, wine director for Emeril Lagasse's Las Vegas restaurant Delmonico Steakhouse, gets off to a strong debut as a winemaker with his Mastery label (a play on his master sommelier title). Wente's Cabernet proves what can be accomplished in Livermore, while Beau Vigne ($50), Antica ($55) and Soñador ($60) fall under what is now the category of "maybe affordable California Cabernet."
