Champans is a Premier Cru climat of the Volnay appellation in the Cote de Beaune. Situated just a short distance south-east of Volnay village, it lies at the heart of the commune's prime vineyard sites. These are located in a tight band of high-quality terroir, stretching between Volnay's boundaries with Pommard in the north and Meursault in the south.

Like the majority of the region's most-prized sites, the vineyards are planted on the mid-slope of the Cote d'Or escarpment. Here, they benefit from well-drained, limestone-rich soils and a south-east-facing aspect – helping the vines to capitalize on the morning and early afternoon sunlight.

Wines taking the Volnay Premier Cru title are made under the strictest production conditions of the Volnay communal appellation, exclusively from grapes grown in vineyards officially recognized as Premier Cru by the INAO – the French government organisation in charge of the country's appellation system.
