Piccola Nera is a red-skinned grape variety grown along the Adriatic coast, but mostly found in the small Carso DOC on the Italian-Slovenian border. Its most common application is in the red blends of the Carso DOC with Refosco (known locally as Terrano), to create deeply colored and highly acidic wines with dark-fruit and spice flavors. Here it is used only in small percentages, and varietal wines remain rare.
Piccola Nera produces short, medium-sized bunches of spherical berries. The bunches tend to be very compact, although the variety is not susceptible to rot. It is also tolerant to climatic change and it is generally vigorous and yields well.
