CHATEAU CROIZET-BAGES Pauillac 2011 Score: 89–92
Bold and spicy, with vivid anise, blackberry and linzer torte flavors and a hefty dose of roasted apple wood. Tarry finish is pretty solid. A surprise showing; have they cleaned things up here after the problematic 2008 and 2009—J.M.
Editor’s note: Wine Spectator senior James Molesworth is in
Bordeaux to taste the 2011 vintage from barrel to determine the quality
and character of the young wines, in order to inform wine lovers who may
be considering buying them en primeur, or as futures.
While spending a few weeks in the region, Molesworth visits numerous
châteaus, interviews many vintners and evaluates hundreds of wines, some
at the châteaus and most in blind tastings organized by Wine Spectator at independent locations. This list contains more than 380 Bordeaux red wine barrel samples reviewed, listed alphabetically.
As these are unfinished wines, they are scored in four-point ranges
(e.g., 89–92 points) to indicate that the ratings are still preliminary.
(Any wines tasted non-blind at châteaus are clearly indicated in the
notes.) When the wines are released in bottle, they will be reviewed
with their peers in blind tastings and given a final score.
